Founded in 1867 in Nashville, Tennessee, the original Ku Klux Klan was a secret society aimed at restoring white supremacy in the South against the radical Republican Congressional Restoration policies.<br/><br/>In 1869, General Forrest ordered the clan to be abandoned and resigned as Grand Wizard. Local organizations survived, some for many years.
