New South Wales may be celebrating a huge victory in the opening match of the first-ever three-game series in Brisbane, but one crucial moment could have made it a very different result.

Footy fans were left baffled after Blues five-eighth Corban Baxter seemed to avoid a penalty for colliding with the kicker's leg in the opening exchanges of the first match of Magic Round at Suncorp Stadium.

The incident came just days after Melbourne Storm and Queensland Maroons hooker Harry Grant faced penalties for a similar, milder offense.

Early in the game, Baxter collided with Maroons' Zahara Temara after she kicked the ball, but no immediate action was taken by referee Kasey Badger or the Bunker.

Later, Baxter was reported for the collision, causing further confusion among fans.

This incident followed Grant's recent sin-binning for minimal contact with a kicker, sparking debates on rule enforcement. The NRL judiciary found Grant's contact posed an injury risk but wasn't careless.

The issue of illegal pressure on kickers has been prominent this season, with several players being charged. Despite injuries from such incidents, the league's football boss denied any directive to crack down on the move.

'Harry Grant got sin-binned for less than what Corban Baxter did. Just saying,' one posted.

'Refereeing is completely different from the men's game. You're binned for attacking a kicking player's leg and a crusher. You only get put on report in this game,' said another.

'Terrible look for the game given the 'player safety' being thrown at us all week by the NRL,' pointed out another.

Blues coach Kylie Hilder played down the contact after the match.

'I don't think she was deliberately attacking the legs. It was just an unfortunate situation,' Hilder said.

It proved a masterstroke for NSW to replace teen sensation Jesse Southwell with veteran halfback Rachael Pearson.

The 30-year-old drilled a dropout to the sideline that signaled the beginning of NSW's first-half dominance before 25,492 fans - the most that have ever attended a women's Origin game.

Pearson continued to kick deftly, showing little sign of the calf injury that had hampered her this month, and made a try-saving one-on-one tackle on Tarryn Aiken in the second half as Queensland stormed back into the game.

'I thought Rachael was outstanding,' NSW coach Kylie Hilder said.

Outstanding with 108 meters and two line breaks, Sky Blues prop Caitlan Johnston grabbed a short ball from Olivia Higgins and crashed over to put paid to Queensland's comeback with six minutes remaining.

The experienced Maroons were clumsy early on and had no answers when the visitors shifted the ball at break-neck speed.

'We knew we made some crucial errors in that first half and it did us in,'Maroons coach Tahnee Norris said.

'If we can fix those crucial errors, I think it changes the game.'

Wearing jewellery is second nature to most of us, it’s something we barely think about. Along with our clothes, hair, make-up, jewellery is an expression of our style, a statement of how we see ourselves in the world.
But unlike – say – a haircut or a new pair of jeans, jewellery reaches to something deeper. Crafted from precious metals and rare stones, our most treasured jewellery is often a token of love, given to mark a significant rite of passage in our lives: an important birthday, a wedding, a promise, an heirloom that links us to someone passed.

We invest the jewellery we love with special powers; these precious metals and stones become such a part of us that we feel lost without them – they seem to become connected to our personal strength and power.

Some might call it superstition, but for Hebden Bridge-based jeweller Toby Cotterill, it’s magic: “I think human beings are capable of magic.” he says, “We can all go beyond what we do in our everyday and get to a different place, and it can help us through hard times. I’m not saying that my jewellery is magic, it’s not me doing it, it’s people putting their emotions and memories and histories into a piece and giving it power.”

Throughout the world and since the beginning of time people have imbued jewellery with talismanic power. The objects we make from precious minerals and stones have been buried with us and long-outlasted skin and bone. Those ancient objects continue to exert an influence and connect us to the stories of people who lived before us.

In his tiny-but-perfectly-formed workshop in Hebden Bridge’s Northlight Studios, Toby sees himself as part of an ancient tradition, using tools and methods that jewellers and metalsmiths have refined and developed over thousands of years.

It’s a magical process to watch. Toby takes gold or silver, melts it, moulds it, cuts and hammers it, drills and files, heats it and plunges it into water, rolls it in sand – completely absorbed, at ease with his tools and lost in the making.

And somehow the metal takes on a new life, becomes something else – a shimmering beetle or fossil-like thing emerges. Something both ancient and alive at the same time, a moving, sparkling, precious thing with weight, something you want to touch…

One of four brothers, Toby’s childhood was spent in the hills and woods of the Welsh countryside: “Dad was a furniture maker, mum was a nurse.” he explains, “We didn’t have much money, but we were very happy. There was a move at the time toward self-sufficiency, so we had a small-holding, a few fields with maybe 20 sheep and a few pigs and cows. Mum and dad between them would work really hard, working the land and bringing us up. I think they wanted us to have that kind of childhood – grubby in the fields, learning the names of animals and plants and trees and just playing outside, making things.”

A MAN who collects DeLorean cars has transformed the classic Back To The Future vehicles into a monster truck, a limousine, a hovercraft, a convertible and a Time Machine Replica. Rich Weissensel, a software engineer, is fanatic about the two-door sports car and owns five custom creations – including a stretched DeLorean Limousine - and three stock DeLoreans. Rich has re-modeled the stainless-steel shape of the iconic cars into bizarre and brilliant automotive creations in an ongoing, 14-year series of projects. The projects started after Rich met the car's founder John DeLorean at the Cleveland DeLorean Car Show in 2000 and showed him some of his ideas and sketches. Rich from Chicago, Illinois, built a custom hovercraft using the stainless steel panels of the DeLorean and a hovercraft cushion which allows the DeLorean to float over any surface.
